Redefine Surgery Closes Oversubscribed Pre-Seed Round and Announces Catalyst OrthoScience Partnership

Redefine Surgery, a medical technology company building physical AI for surgery, today announced the closing of an oversubscribed pre-seed financing round, bringing total capital raised to $10 million. Backed predominantly by surgeon investors, the financing will support continued development of the company’s surgical intelligence platform as it advances toward commercialization.

The financing announcement follows Wednesday’s announcement by Catalyst OrthoScience that it has joined Redefine Surgery as a Founding Partner. Together, the companies plan to develop an integrated surgical intelligence ecosystem that connects data, decisions, and outcomes across shoulder replacement procedures.

“Closing this round and establishing our partnership with Catalyst are two important steps toward bringing surgical intelligence into everyday practice,” said Peter Verrillo, CEO and Co-Founder of Redefine Surgery. “Our surgeon investors have helped shape what we are building and why it matters. With Catalyst, we have a partner that shares our belief that the opportunity extends across the full episode of care – from planning and guidance to learning from each procedure. Together, we aim to put that knowledge to work for surgical teams while keeping surgeons in control.”

These milestones support Redefine’s broader goal of building intelligent technologies around the realities of surgery and the expertise of surgeons. Their shared goal is to establish a foundation that learns from real-world surgical experience and helps inform better decisions over time, supporting improvements in procedural efficiency, consistency, and value for providers and patients.

“We have an opportunity to move beyond the traditional boundaries of surgical technology and rethink how artificial intelligence and surgical robotics can improve surgery,” said Dr. Anthony Miniaci, MD, FRCSC, President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. “The next generation of surgical guidance will be an intelligent partner and collaborator to the surgeon, understanding anatomy, helping optimize incisions and surgical exposure, and optimizing implant position based on a personalized plan for every patient.

“The goal is to move beyond simply navigating an implant to technology that understands the entire procedure and helps the surgeon deliver the best possible surgery, every time.”

Redefine’s platform is designed to be portable, open, and adaptable across anatomies, instruments, and surgical workflows, with an initial focus on orthopedic surgery. Its computer vision technology is being developed to help machines see and understand surgery, creating an intelligence layer for real-time guidance, smarter instruments, and robotic assistance. This approach, Collaborative Surgical Intelligence, is intended to make expert surgical technique more accessible through the tools surgical teams use.

Redefine is showcasing its technology this week at ICSES in Vancouver, building on its presentation at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons earlier this year. These engagements support the company’s efforts to expand clinical collaboration beyond its core network of over 25 surgeon advisors. Redefine is capturing procedures across multiple surgical specialties to train and validate its proprietary AI models, with surgeon input guiding development around the demands of clinical practice.

Redefine’s platform remains under development, with commercialization subject to applicable regulatory clearance and product readiness.

About Redefine Surgery

Redefine Surgery is building Physical AI for surgery. Launching first in orthopedic surgery, the Redefine Platform combines computer vision, artificial intelligence and robotics to deliver a more accessible alternative to conventional robotic surgery. Unlike today’s large, expensive and procedure-specific systems, our platform is designed to be portable, efficient, open and adaptable across anatomies, instruments and surgical workflows. The Redefine Vision System gives machines the ability to see and understand surgery. It enables precise navigation today while creating the intelligence layer for smarter instruments, robotic systems and real-time surgical guidance tomorrow. Every procedure captured by the platform contributes to a continuously improving model of surgical expertise. By the end of this decade, we will build an AI that learns from the world’s best surgeons and transfers their mastery to every operating room. For more information, visit www.redefinesurgery.com.
